Neurodivergent

Neurodivergent describes people whose brains develop or work differently from what is considered typical, resulting in varied strengths and challenges. The term emphasizes natural differences rather than deficits.

Recognizing neurodivergence is crucial for fostering inclusivity and acceptance. It encourages a shift away from viewing these differences as deficits, promoting a more positive perspective on the diverse ways people think and learn.

Neurodivergent persons who regularly navigate neurotypical spaces and “perform neurotypicality” often do this at a high cost to themselves; particularly, when expectations outweigh abilities or support and or they pushed themselves beyond their capacities over a long period of time. This is an unsustainable situation and can lead to burnout. (Raymaker et al.)
